The brilliant Sarah Kaider has lent her writing talents to interpret and translate the atmosphere captured in this song into the literary passage you'll find below.


You swing the door open and take in the dark, brisk air. It's quiet and your mind is still bustling from the experiences you had from the hours prior. You toss a light coat over your shoulders. You’re not sure you’ll need it once you get going, but you like to be prepared. As you turn to lock the door behind you, you seal your journey. It’s happening.

The sidewalk is firm beneath your feet, and you start with an uneasy cadence, until eventually your pace beats to the rhythm of your own internal drum. It’s quiet but for the light sounds in the background of car wheels sliding over asphalt, the crickets serenading the moon, and the bubbling of a nearby brook. You lose yourself in the sounds of the night and trust your feet to carry you to where you’re supposed to be.

The quiet suburbs of green and brown become the greys, neons, and horns of city nightlife. You continue at your same pace, surrounded by hundreds of people of all walks of life briskly walking, and sometimes running, to the next exciting experience waiting for them.

You close your eyes and lose yourself in the sounds of the high heels hitting the concrete, the light giggles of friends who’ve succumbed to a sip too many of bubble and spirit, steam releasing from storm drains in the streets, and choruses of songs you’ve heard many a time.

As they open, your eyes fixate on large buildings with neon signs for food, drink, shop, and entertainment. All different colors, shapes, sizes, whispering at you seductively to stop by for a moment and enjoy all that the city life has to offer. You could stop, but your feet aren’t ready. You’re needed elsewhere. Your journey presses on.

The neon fades and so do all of your worries and the pressures of the hours prior. The struggles of daily life seem pale and miniscule compared to the titan structures previously surrounding you and the number of steps you made in your stride. Tall trees and the smells of oak and pine replace metal and glass frames around you. Small critters scurry by you, carrying seed and acorn, dancing and playing on land and bark. You smile. They’re happy with what they have and enjoy the little things that life has to offer. You make a mental note to come back to that thought yourself when times get hard or you find yourself down a rabbit hole of worry and fear.

A deep breathe of the fresh night air seals the lessons you’ve picked up along the way. And your feet conclude their journey at your front door. You turn back to look in the direction you came from, then unlock your door.
